Volunteering is about giving your time and energy freely and by choice without concern for financial gain, to benefit the public and/or your community.
As a volunteer you can really have an impact on peoples' lives and the community around you, as well as making your own life more fulfilled and rewarding.

Whatever your age, interests or background, whether you can commit regularly or occasionally, there is likely to be something suitable for you. What you do as a volunteer depends on what you want to achieve. Everyone has a personal reason for volunteering and you should choose something that will help you fulfil your personal goal.

What will I be doing as a volunteer?

We have a range of volunteer roles available at WITH. These roles change regularly to reflect the new projects and services we can offer. Volunteers can choose to focus on one or a combination of these roles. Each of these roles requires a different set of skills and so has its own role description. Click on each role title to see the full role description.

If none of the roles here seem right for you, search on for alternative opportunities in other organisations.

How do I become a WITH Volunteer?

If you're interested in becoming a WITH volunteer and have chosen the role(s) from the list above that best fits your skills, experience and personal goals, you then need to completed the following Application Process:

  1. Download or contact us to receive the Application Form.

  2. Complete the form and return it to WITH.

  3. We will then assess your suitability for the role and contact you to arrange an informal interview.

  4. If both parties still want to proceed, WITH will collect references you will complete a DBS Check (if necessary for the role).

  5. We will invite you to your volunteer induction training.

  6. You can start volunteering.

This process can seem a bit daunting but it's very informal and is just done to ensure that WITH is the right fit for you and vice versa. If you're concerned about any part of the application process, we're always happy for you to call us for a chat.

*Please Note: The Application Process will be slightly different to this if you are applying to be a Trustee as our current Board have to approve all new Trustees.

We appreciate that most people want to volunteer because they want to make a difference. However, volunteers are representatives of WITH and so we expect our volunteers to:

  • Give a commitment to volunteering. Whether you can commit to volunteering weekly, monthly or once a year, we expect that you will be reliable and give us adequate notice if you cannot fulfil your commitment.

  • Attend training. WITH provides induction training for all volunteers. We also provide on-going training to support our volunteer’s involvement and enhance their own skills and knowledge.

  • Commit to Equality and Diversity. We welcome applications from all adults regardless of age, creed, gender, race, sexuality or disability. It is a fundamental requirement that all staff, board members and volunteers respect people’s differences. We have an Equality and Diversity policy which is reviewed regularly.

  • Commit to Safeguarding. As we work with children, young people and vulnerable adults, all staff and volunteers who have access to vulnerable individuals must undergo a DBS check and regular safeguarding training. We have a Safeguarding policy which is reviewed annually and must be adhered to at all times.

  • Maintain appropriate dress, language and behaviour. All volunteers and staff must hold themselves to a high standard of behaviour. We have a zero tolerance policy towards violent or abusive behaviour and offensive language. We expect all volunteers to take their job as a positive role model to children and young people very seriously.

  • Adhere to our smoke and substance-free policy. It is the policy of WITH that all of our workplaces are smoke-free and that all employees and volunteers have a right to work/volunteer in a smoke free environment. Furthermore, as volunteers and staff are role models to vulnerable individuals, smoking, drinking alcohol, using substances or arriving under the influence will not be tolerated.

  • Ensure the ethos of WITH is upheld at all times. We strive to be an excellent organisation but can only be so with the support of our staff and volunteers. All staff and volunteers are expected to familiarise themselves with and follow the procedures set out in our full range of policies. This way we can make sure that everybody has a positive experience and receives the full benefit from their interaction with WITH.

Why Volunteer?

People volunteer at different times of their lives for different reasons:

  • you might want to give something back to your local community or a particular group which helped you at a difficult time in your life

  • you might want to meet new friends

  • you may be unemployed/looking for a new career direction/have been made redundant so want to learn new skills and keep yourself active

  • you could have experiences and skills you’d like to pass on to others.

It’s flexible - you decide how much you want to do and when, taking into account the other commitments you have in your life.

Although you won’t be paid, there are other rewards for volunteering:

  • building up confidence and self-esteem

  • meeting new and like-minded people

  • training opportunities

  • learning transferable skills

  • trying out new experiences

  • spending time around happy, well-behaved horses and gaining equine experience.

  • helping others as well as yourself

  • feeling valued as part of a team of dedicated staff and volunteers

  • and having a lot of fun!

There are many training opportunities you can access as a volunteer, it shouldn’t affect your benefits and WITH even offers out-of-pocket expenses to cover your travel costs.  Plus, it looks great on your CV - many employers look very favourably on volunteering experience and we can provide a reference for you!
